Millions (if not billions) of websites are created each year, your job is to make the ordinary person want to visit your site instead of the competition, how do you do this, you must advertise, you must be shameless in advertising, if you sell on ebay, include a business card in every thing that you mail out, ( i do this, it helps) if you have a lot of friends and you forward jokes to each other, just include your site at the bottom of the email, you never know how many other people are going to see that email, or how many people they are going to forward it to!
the hardest thing to grasp about advertising is that you mast pay for 100% of all advertising but only 20% of it will work, and you wont know which 20% that is until you have already wrote the check
if you have a website submit your site to search engines (never pay more than $5 for this, i charge under $4 on ebay auctions) if trhe content of your site relates to the content of another site, ask the webmaster if yall can put a link to each others sites! (dont ask competition for this)
try to get listed on as many webpages as possible to get your link popularity as high as possible!

i thought that i needed to add a little more info to this one
find sites that have some of the same content as you but arent in direct competition, try to strike a deal where you link to each others site, or try to purchase cheap banner space from the other site, look at it this way, the traffic on the other site is targeted to whatever is on that site, if you have a link on that site, the people are looking for products related to that site, if you run a cigar website you dont want your banner on a wahm site, you want a link on a lighter's site, or cigarette site, something related to your content.
any publicity is good publicity, i have a cheap window decal that i had made for my truck, at least once a week people ask me about the decal that advertises my websites, it advertises 24/7/365, great advertising at malls, flea markets, etc,,, you are going to these places anyway, might as well get someting out of it.
give stuff away with your advertisement on it, every now and then (when i have extra advertising budget,) i have hats, shirts, pens, or candy made with my logo on it and i give them away, you can also give some stuff to local radio stations and they will give them away for you and mention your company on the radio
sponsor an event, any event, i sponsored a blood drive once, all it cost me was one ad in a local paper and contacting the bloodmobile to come to my town, the local radio stations and sometimes tv stations kick in and do a report, getting you extra attention!
hopefully those tips well help you become successful
keyword advertising is also a great way to get targeted visitors to your site, google, yahoo, msn, and seekerbug all have platforms that let you bid on keywords to advertise your sites
