of course this is my opinion and there will be plenty of folks who disagree, but i think then 87-91 4 cylinder toyota camry/celica is (one of ) the best cars ever made.I base this opinion on 25 years in the automotive business.Anyone who has owned this camry in 4 cylinders can attest to my statement. They are practical, economical, get phenominal gas mileage. I have noticed that the 4 cylinder models consistently achieve over 200k miles. the only other cars that do this regularly are mercedes and volvos( at a much higher sale price and maintence cost). I have even seen these camrys to 300k miles. the 4 cylinder motor is not overpowered, it is very efficient and a nice match for the transmissions. these transmissions on the 4 cylinders dont blow, because the motor is not overpowered. The parts for this model are easily available new or used, and the pricing is very reasonable, the salvage yards sell these parts cheap. The biggest drawback is the rust that occurs over the wheelwells. the motors and trannys on these car far exceeds the life of the body of this car.Of course the camrys that followed are also very good, but im not sure if they match the reliability of the 87-91 model. If you are looking at these cars rust woyuld be your major concern. These cars are very available on ebay and of course you should consult your mechanic before looking into a used car, but this particular car on ebay will give you the most bang for the buck.
