This is a buyers guide, and only meant for educating a prospective buyer looking for a nightshot sony camera.
You have found this guide because you searched for xray or x-ray cameras. Its a good idea to do both types of searches, more results may show up.
The term xray or x-ray camera is simply a nickname for a camera with nightshot that can be used during the daytime in full sunlight, usually made by sony before July of 1998, some cameras can be modified to out perform a 1998 sony camera. It also refers to a camera with 0-lux
It also refers to a camera that is used for paranormal, ghost and spirit photography, under the infrared light spectrum, things that you dont normally see are visible.
Nightshot does not mean Xray!
How good is the nightshot on a sony camera?
You will get about 10 to 12 feet from a camera with nightshot, so that does not mean very much.
If you are thinking that a sony camera with nightshot is the same as night vision goggles that the military uses, you made the wrong guess! But a camera can be made to see further at night, and have the similar effect as a night vision camera, those are known as modified infrared cameras.
Modified cameras
These cameras look the same as a normal camera, but it has been internally fixed so the infrared receiving capabilities are increased. They are similar to the unmodified cameras from 1998, but they may be digital, have a higher degree of zoom, as in 72x versus 560x zoom, and a modified camera may also be digital format, not the old 1998 analog format.
What does 0-lux mean?
According to the International System of Units, "LUX" is defined in terms of lumens per meter squared (lm/m2). One lux is equal to 0.00146 kilogram per second cubed (1.46 x 10-3 kg / s3). It would seem that now we need to know what a "lumen" is: it is defined in terms of candela steradians (cd multiplied by sr). One lumen is the amount of light emitted in a solid angle of 1 sr, from a source that radiates to an equal extent in all directions, and whose intensity is 1 cd. A "candela" sounds a bit more familiar, something to do with candles... it is defined as the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 x 1012 hertz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian
So what does all that mean? It means that a camera with a low rating will have better recording capabilities in lower light situations, ex: 0 lux.
People that want to fool you:
There are people trying to sell a normal camera and pass it off as nightvision, or xray, they will write and hype up the "normal camera they are selling as xray or night vision. They will make false statements that the camera can see through objects, or it can see through............I cant tell you! Be very careful and avoid these sellers, also research their feedback at what they bought, they will sell you a refurbished camera!
