CGC/PGX/slabbed books have revolutionized comic book collecting over the past few years. At any time, there are thousands of CGC-slabbed and hundreds of PGX-slabbed books on eBay. The proliferation of these professionally-graded and encapsulated comic books shows that this former niche market is now enjoying general acceptance from the collecting community.
With many of these books having high valuations, the quality of a seller's listing for a CGC/PGX-slabbed could potentially result in hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dollars! For buyers, a bad listing can lead to disappointment when the item received is not as expected.
Below is a compilation of useful tips submitted by members of the got CGC? eBay discussion group.
- A high quality image is always the most important part of your listing. For slabbed books, the image must also be large enough to give the buyer a full view of the book.
- eBay's default gallery image doesn't cut it. If you don't use the super-size picture option, then use a 3rd party site like auctiva or even photobucket for hosting larger images.
- A scan of the book is the best image to use. This will give the best view of the book.
- A digital camera is a good substitute if you don't have a scanner. Be sure to use plenty of natural light and avoid using a flash, which will create a bad glare off the case.
- Include a full image of the book and an image of the label. The details on the label should be readable.
- When describing the book, include the following:
- Title & Issue Number
- Grade
- Page Quality (White, Off-White, Cream, etc.)
- Label/Serial Number
- Label Color
- Grade On (from PGX)
- Any additional notes on the label
- Pedigree Notes
- From the Collection of Notes
- If the book is RESTORED, explain the restoration done and the quality
- If the restoration was done while the book was done while in your possession before submitting it, give a full explanation
- Describe if the restoration was determined to be professional or amateur and if it is slight, moderate or extensive.
- If the book is QUALIFIED, explain why it is qualified.
- Typically, CGC grades a book as Qualified, because it has a signature that they did not witness. Be sure to include who signed the book and when and where.
- If you have a picture of when the book was signed, include the image
- If there is a Certificate of Authenticity available, highlight this.
- If the autograph is numbered, indicate this in the listing.
- Describe the condition of the slab
- Yes, the value is in the book, but because of the costs associated with slabbing book, this is important.
- Indicate if the book has or does not have any scratches, cracks or any other defects or blemishes.
Hopefully, these tips will help both sellers and buyers achieve a transaction that is satisfactory to both sides.
