There are millions of cubic yards of empty space being hauled day and night all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. This really is excess freight capacity. You can tap into this resource to ship your large, heavy, or bulky items to your buyer at half or less than half the commercial LTL tariff (translation: "really cheap!").
One excellent source is , kind of an "eBay for transportation." U-Ship drivers range from 18-wheeler interstate teamsters -- returning empty with no backload, to car & boat transporters, to casual truck, trailer, or van drivers who are moving or being transferred. In short, you post your shipment on the board (origin/destination, timing, weight, volume, and type of goods). Interested drivers respond with their bids. I've had excellent luck with U-Ship carriers to relocate an auctioned luxury car and boat FL>VA, a massive antique chandelier coast-to-coast VA>CA, and numerous short-hauls, 250-500 miles. My policy is to pay the driver half upon loading and have my buyer pay the remaining half upon delivery. U-Ship.com is on the 'web.
Another good resource is the "customer board" at U-Haul.com. Theoretically it is dedicated to college students and military who are transferring ... but anyone can use it. Drivers often have extra space in their U-Haul truck or trailer, available in exchange for gas or partial rental money. U-Haul.com (customer-to-customer boards) is on the 'web.
Yet another resource is . (Click on "travel" then use your browser page search to find "truck," "trailer," or "van.") This is not a bidding situation -- just direct price negotiation ($$, gas, or whatever) between driver and shipper. eRideShare.com (Travel) is on the 'web.
An underused common carrier is . This is a bus station-to-station service. (Package Xpress also offers local delivery, but its use would negate their really cheap over-the-road rates.) Weight is limited to 100 lbs. and size limited to measurements of the bus baggage compartments. This option is especially good for buyers located in smaller cities and towns . . . only because I've found that many big-city buyers are adverse to visiting their own bus stations. Package XPress (shipgreyhound.com) is on the 'web.
Finally ... this one really is a ZZinger! PayPal, for some reason, seems to keep hidden one of its true Family Jewels. This gem is their link to print USPS postal labels for PayPal account holders (which counts in most of us eBayers). You can ship any goods here -- not just auction items. Its great advantage over the USPS Click-n-Ship site (which prints only Express and Priority) is that it prints Express, Priority, Parcel Post, First class, on down to Media Mail . . . and now, INTERNATIONAL including Customs Forms! (You heard it here first.)
Regards and Good Luck!
