"Food for Thought"
How many times in your life have you heard this phrase? Countless! I have heard many theories on Hunting practices. Such as Game Management Unit: Which means, everyone that hunts in a particular area agree to only harvest Bucks with a designated number of points on one antler. usually 4 or more. I fully agree with this system, IF it were state wide and not just in specific small areas. My husband and I always let many little bucks go during the bow season.A few days ago I was playing around with a rattle bag and a grunt tube. At 7:30 am II managed to call in a little 3 point, I rattled a little more and hit the grunt tube twice. a few minutes later at 8:02am a nice 8 point came up the same runway. I harvested this deer, proceeded to track and find him. I went back to my blind and waited for my husband, I didnt want to disrupt his hunt. At 8:14 am I started messing around with the rattle bag and grunt tube again. At 8:34 am a bigger, much nicer 8 point came in on the same runway! He got to the spot where I started tracking my buck and didnt like the area at all. He danced around alittle and then snuck off in the other direction. I have never tried the rattle bag before and was having a great time with it. I did not harvest this bigger buck because I already had one deer down and I believe you should get your deer out of the woods before you harvest another. I learned a few things about deer behavior that morning, and that is what this is really about.

- Had I let the smaller 8 point go, I would have been able to harvest a wall mounter 8 point. This is not always going to be the case. sometimes you only see one buck, other times you'll see several. If you want a trophy, then you must be patient and selective. If all you want is freezer meat, then harvest a doe. The meat is MUCH better than a rutting old buck! Just look them over real good, make sure that it is not a large button buck. you can usually tell by the size of there ears compared to their head. fawns have great big ears and a puppy look about them. older deer have bigger heads that make their ears appear to be smaller. A fawn in a typical fall weed feild is detectable only by it's head and neck, whereas a yearling deer you can see the top of it's back, an older deer you can see the body with ease. Keep these things in mind and you should never mistakingly harvest a button buck or fawn.
- Rattle bags and grunt tubes do work, if you don't get carried away with it. Practice in the field is the best way to learn. Never use a rutting buck grunt before the rut. don't grunt at a buck if he is stopped and looking in your direction. You don't want him to know where the grunt is coming from, you want him to look for it. be patient.
- Never walk a deer runway, thier nose is there best defense, and it will know you were there.
- You can never fool all of the deer all of the time. All you really need is to fool one deer, one time!
