Buying mine cut diamonds can be very exciting. Here is something to check for. First look for the depth of a mine cut stone. That is the way a true mine cut is measured in carat weight. These diamonds were cut right in the mines in Europe by hand.  They only had kerosene lanterns for light.  This is the reason for shape not being like the stones cut today. Even down to the facets. Secondly look for the point on the bottom of the stone, it is sometimes shaved off and sometimes left with a point on it. The reason for this was because of the gem was close to finger the actual ring part itself depended if stone was pointed or flat as to how high the setting would be. This is probably the earliest form of TIFFANY setting.
