this guide will be helpful to those of us that have had glassware and want to keep it looking good. a piece of glasswaer is a very important investment that a person can make and this guide will explore some pratical advice to help keep it looking good for many years to come or if you don't know how to clean it once you have bought it. or if you plan to sell somthing in an online auctioin
first let's explore some of the common cleaning techniques that a person can use to clean that piece that you have had in the attic for example.. the type of material that the piece is made of can have a bearing on what method you can use to clean it. if the glasss is hand blown you would use a soft cloth made of cotton with a mild detergent such as windex or dawn dishsoap..make sure that the sink has a soft material on the bottom like a rubber mat. wash by hand and air dry. if your piece has a decorative gold rim it is advisable NOT to use the dishwasher or your dishware could be damaged or the delicate trim lost. if you are dealing with ceramic items use care not to use harsh detergents. anytime you come accrosss a difficult stain first try soaking the item with a mild soap and plenty of hot water. try not to scrub too hard as this may scratch or discolor the item.. if you are ever in doubt about a type of material somthing may be made up of. first try to take the item to someone in the glass business or a repuitable antique dealer. that person will most likely know the what and how on that piece. the best thing you can do for any of your glass ware is not to store it in a smokey enviorment. smoke can and will leave tar and resin on any surface and discolor the item or permanately damage it.most glass companies sell special cases for place settings and delicate glasses also.
this guide is meant as a simple guide for everyday cleaning or when you are going to display somthing or sell it. it is not all inclusive. every type of situation is diffrent.
