The first thing to do when collecting oa flaps(order of the arrow lodge flaps) is to consider what you are going to collect:

*Your lodge:        flaps from the lodge you are in

*Your section:    flaps from other lodges in your area, region, or section

*Pre-fdl:              these are flaps that do not have a fdl or the word bsa on them

*First flaps:       these flaps are one of two types usually either first twill or first solid (an exception to this is there were a few maybe 3 woven first flaps)

*First solids:    usually a swiss embroidered flap that is fully embroidered (no twill showing)

*Name and number collection:     this is by far the toughest collection   getting one flap from every lodge name and/or  number merged and current not to mention the most expensive

* An animal , totem,  character etc.. you like:   ( fox flaps for instance  lodges, 74, 221,280...)

Once you figure out your goal stick with it. also learn the classification terms used with grading patches.

Learn what the following terms mean;

twill, solid, round, neckerchief, swiss, greer, moritz, cut edge, rolled edge, lock stitch, cloth back, plastic back, glue back, gauze back, odd shape,   plus quite a few others that decribe  just twill like smooth,  rough, left , right.

Once you learn the basics of patch collecting; it can be a very rewarding and also a very valuable investment as well as a lifelong hobby. Plus you will never finish your collection unless the lodge merges.
