When buying glass candleholders or candlesticks for your home, there are a few things to keep in mind.
1. What is your intended purpose of the purchase. Is it a one time use. What style do you like. What style are you trying to show at your event or what style is your house or the room that the candlestick is going to be used.
2. Glass candleholders are an art form in glass. They often show what is going on in national events or world events - either directly or indirectly. They can also show a person's taste in furniture design and decoration. Some "colonial" style candlesticks would not look correct in a "Modern" style house.
3. One should be careful not to allow the candle to burn down into the candle cup - this will break the glass and may cause a fire.
4. Do not put glass candlesticks in the dishwasher - the detergent etches the glass and makes it cloudy.
5. When buying used candlesticks, examine the piece carefully for cracks in the stem, base, and candle cup. These can be professionally repaired but it is expensive.
6. Be aware --- that buying candlesticks at flea markets, thrift stores, and on ebay can become addictive. There are now a number of books which will help you identify your treasures. Your public library and interlibrary loan are the best places to start until you find an author and a set of books that you find easy to use.
