First and formost, ask questions, then bid. You have to clear up any misconceptions you may have and then be prepared to make a sound decision. If the seller is unwilling to disvulge knowledge of what they are selling, or flat out doesn't respond to your inquiries, don't bid. You have every right to not bid, buy from responsive helpful sellers and always read feedback. Ebay has created a wonderful system to rate trading partners that makes everything fall into place. If their feedback is questionable, pay with paypal, and there is added protection. Think before you bid, it can save alot of face.
