OK, this probably isn't going to solve anything, but I offer you below, 10 reasons to buy the Classic Mini, followed by 10 reasons to buy the "new" Mini. If you still can't make up your mind, you can either buy one of each, or flip a coin. Don't say I didn't try.
10 Reasons to buy the Classic Mini:
1) Price. You can get a classic Mini for $5000 or less. A really GREAT one will cost you $10,000 or less.2) It is the Original.
3) Superior gas mileage. The classic Mini gets about 35-40mpg. The New Mini gets about 35 on the highway.
4) Rarity. In the US, a Classic Mini is much rarer than the New Mini.
5) Fewer plastic parts
6) Smaller by about a foot and a half, easier to park.
7) Real chrome
8) Cheaper tires (though they may be hard to find and probably not radials)
9) A bigger back seat (but not much legroom if you get the handy seat position extenders)
10) EVERYTHING is simpler and it's a cinch to customize.
X Reasons to buy the New Mini:
I.. Safety. From the air bags to the padded dash, to the general not-a-tin can feeling
II .Reliability. You can get a brand new one, with no Lucas electricals. With a warranty.
III .Easier to finance. Banks don't like 20 year old (+) cars.
IV. Air conditioning. And an engine designed to run it.
V. Bigger wheels make for smaller bumps
VI. One, maybe two more gears
VII. A LOT less road noise
VIII. Better factory - installed music system
IX. Better seats
X. Dealer service
In the interest of Full Disclosure, I am a proud Classic Mini driver, though mine is LHD (but reads in Kilometres). I have decided to wait until the price comes down a little more on the New Mini- or until my rich Nephew gives me one.
I hope you have enjoyed this little debate and will reward me with a
"helpful" vote, if not a New Mini. Please check out my other
guides and reviews, including the slightly more serious Wentworth's MORE PRACTICAL LOOK at the Classic Mini.
