Particularly with high-end GPS systems (like the Garmin GPSMAP 396 and 496), but more and more with other products, scammers are out in full force this holiday season on eBay.

Here's a 3 step plan to identify a scam and prevent becoming a VICTIM!

1: Loook for those "dead giveaway" signs that a listing is probably a scam. If you find a $2,000 GPS system for $499 or a $4000 LCD TV for $800 and the seller includes a line like "Email me at somedumbemail2343@whackoo,com to BUY IT NOW for $400" ... it's a scam listing. You can also check out previous bids on the item and if you pick up on shill bidding, BEWARE.

2: If you're unable to determine if the listing is legit or not, there's a no-brainer way to confidently deal with the seller. Simply request the seller's name, phone number and address so you can discuss the item before you bid (and don't be afraid to let the seller know that you're unsure about the listing ... any legitimate seller will be eager to supply his/her contact info for an interested buyer on an expensive item). Now, before you call ... go to superpages dot com and click "People Pages" at the top, then click "Reverse Phone". Enter the 10 digit phone number and see if the name and address match the info the seller gave you. Also be sure to check the item location to see if that matches the phone number location. Now make that call and be sure you're speaking to the person responsible for the item.

3: FINALLY & PROBABLY MOST IMPORTANT.... when it's time to pay, don't pay using wire transfer (like WesternUnion or MoneyGram or by loading someone's credit card). The only way you should ever pay for a big ticket gizmo is by credit card (in my opinion). Credit card companies will reverse the charge if you don't receive the item. If you absolutely must pay with another method use PayPal. If you ever choose to pay with a wire transfer, understand the risk involved (for which there is basically no recourse and the seller can simply make off with your money or ship you a box of old shoes for your $1000 payment). If a seller ever tries to convince you to pay using a cash method (wire, money order, check, etc) ... just don't do it. If the eBay listing allows credit cards and PayPal then you should be allowed to pay that way. And when it comes to shipping, always opt for the more expensive door-to-door "TRACKABLE SHIPPING METHOD" ... WITH INSURANCE. Don't be rediculous and agree to receive a thousand dollar gizmo by parcel post.

Follow these 3 simple steps and you won't ever have to worry about being suckered. If you do, you'll have some recourse.
