Buying an automobile can be stressful.  So much time is spent just figuring out which year, make, and model to buy.  After narrowing the list, you head down to the local dealership only to discover the prices are too high, the interest rates are not what you expected, and everything in your payment range is parked in the back of the building.  Why waste an entire day at an auto dealership when everything you need is at your fingertips?

My name is Robert Johnson, owner of West Valley Auto Group in Phoenix, AZ.  When I purchased my first automobile, an eighty-something Ford Festiva many years ago, not much research was available.  Spending the day at the local dealership was almost required.

Today, the Internet has revolutionized the auto industry with research sites, feedback ratings, owner reviews, true cost of ownership information, even price comparisons down the street or throughout the country.  The spirit of competition has worked in favor of the consumer.  Now that substantial information is available, how do you get the best deal?

Used automobiles clearly save us the most money over buying new.  Used automobiles have depreciated and that savings is money left in your pocket or out of a loan.  The savings could mean a shorter loan term or money for an added accessory that's important to you.

Now that we know buying a used automobile is the best bet when it comes to saving money, we certainly don't want a lemon.  In the used car market, there are salvage vehicles, flood vehicles, frame-damaged vehicles, hail-damaged vehicles, repos and others you want to avoid because you cannot be certain of their safety.  There are also private sellers who prefer selling their car because the dealer doesn't value the car as much as the owner expects.  There are many vehicles available from private sellers.  Some are in great condition.  However, would you buy a slice of pie from stranger?  Maybe at a trusted bake sale.

Hands down, the best quality and value can be found in PROGRAM cars.  A program vehicle is an off-lease, fleet, dealer demo, or rental unit released from the corporate owner. Generally, these vehicles are in top condition since corporate owners employ maintenance practices that exceed manufacturer requirements. In addition, the very best program cars are late models (or up to 2 years old), enjoy the remaining factory warranty, qualify for extended service plans, and have very little wear and tear.  These vehicles are showroom ready and only require one thing - a buyer!

Now that we know program cars offer the best value for your money, what about financing?  Traditionally, most auto dealerships offer financing through in-house, primary, and secondary sources.  When an auto dealership takes a credit application, it's an opportunity to earn more revenue when you finance with them.  Here's an example:  If you qualify for a "Buy Rate (true cost of the loan)" of 6% and the dealer charges you a "Sell Rate (true cost of the loan plus the dealer's interest rate mark-up)" of 8%, the extra 2% on the loan is dealer profit in most cases.

How do you obtain the best financing?  Secure approval, on your own, through a credit union or online lender.  Credit unions and online lenders offer great deals.  Credit unions offer great rates as a member benefit.  Online lenders can return a decision in less than 60-seconds and a check can be sent overnight.  Once approved, most credit unions allow up to 90-days before the approval expires.  Online lenders have varying expiration periods.

Now that we know program cars are the way to go and financing can be obtained at more affordable and convenient rates, you have the tools to save a ton of money on your next automobile purchase.  We hope this guide will be helpful and you'll consider West Valley Auto Group the next time you, or someone you know, is in the market for an automobile.
