Mini biking has been great fun for years and always will be a great source of fun. Safety must never be overlooked. Safety goes furthur than just the rider. It starts with your bike. No matter if your building a rider bike to have fun or an all out restored show bike all bikes must be built to be safe.
Some common areas not thought about when building a mini bike can really effect the outcome when it comes to safety. Those areas include wheel bearings, jackshaft bearings, chains and control cables.
Cheap wheel bearings can fail prematurely and can cause problems of out of control, rear wheel locking up(skidding) when chains jump off, poor handling.
Cheapy chains will never hold their length and will always require adjusting because they never stop stretching. Due to the excessive constant stretching, breakage and jumping of sprockets can occur, which can lead to rider injury if chain would hit the rider when it breaks and flies off. Just as above, if it comes off it can cause locking up(skidding) of rear wheel. We all know the result of skidding.
Cheapy steering bearings won't hold up to the bumps and pounding the front forks take when riding off road or when doing wheelies. A front fork not properly attached is an accident waiting to happen.
Control cables (throttle and brake) made to the incorrect length can be a danger as well....Too short, they can cause the throttle or brakes to apply when turning the handlebars. Too long they are easily tangled, caught, stuck on other bike components and can be a great danger.
Bottom line...Safety....Keep everyone safe. Quality chains, bearings and cables will add $20-$30 more to your total cost of your bike during it's build/rebuild. That $20-$30 will be money well spent if you have tons of hours SAFE pleasure from your newly finished minibike and FAR cheaper than a doctor's visit to repair an injury.
Don't forget to always ride with a quality helmet.
