MAZDA MIATA DEAD or VERY DRAINED BATTERY After Driving Infrequently and/or Short Distances

CHECKLIST with PROBABLE SOLUTION

  • If the Following Applies:

  • Mazda Miata

  • Dead or Very Drained Battery

  • You Don't Drive Frequently (Winter/Garaged/Storage)

  • You Drive Only Short Distances

  • Extra Power Features

  • Alarm Is Already Off

  • Trickle Charger Isn't Enough

My Mazda Miata LS was not driven very often and so I was left with a very drained/dead battery in a few months.

I had this problem for 6 years and after 6 batteries, I resolved the situation.

  • My Miata was not driven for long periods and was garaged all winter.

  • I only drove short distances (local store and back).

  • I used a trickle charger often, but my battery was still dead by spring.

  • The extra power features (Miata LS) were also draining my battery.

SOLUTION: Get a Master Battery Disconnect Switch

It goes by a few other names including Master Battery Cut Off

You can get them for about $12 or less.

      Battery Master Disconnect

The Above Photo is the type I use and is designed for my 'Top Post' Miata Battery.  Make sure that the one you purchase works with your Mazda Miata.  My dealership installed one end of the 'Switch' to the Negative Post of the battery and attached the other end to the Battery Cable. On the above design you can see a green knob.  Tighten it fully to use the battery and loosen it a liitle bit to stop the charge. I open my door and look at the overhead light to check the charge.  My setup is perfect for when I simply don't want my battery drained from lack of driving!

I hope this breif guide was helpful.
