How to Replace a Side-View Mirror

Driving without a functional side-view mirror is not only dangerous, it may also lead to traffic citations. You should replace a side-view mirror as soon as possible.

Replacing a mirror can be a challenging procedure and the potential for damaging your vehicle exists. So if you don't know what you're doing, visit a mechanic or authorized dealer. There's nothing wrong with relying on the services of a professional.

What You Need

  • Replacement Mirror. This should exactly match your vehicle's make, model, and year. Your dealership may carry some stock, but you can probably save money by buying online. Visit our catalog to find what you need.
  • The Owner's Manual. Read through this to get a better understanding of your vehicle, and how you should handle the side mirror and related components.
  • Screwdriver. You will use this to loosen any screws that keep the mirror fastened to your vehicle.
  • Socket Wrench. You will use this to loosen any bolts that keep the mirror fastened to your vehicle.
  • Small and Shallow Container. To keep any screws and bolts you release from getting misplaced.

What You Need to Do

  1. Roll down your window and make sure the engine is off.
  2. Disconnect the negative cable of your battery to avoid any accidental electrocution
  3. Use the pry tool to remove the trim and any interior panels covering the mirror assembly. Use the screwdriver to loosen and remove any screws securing the inner panels. Make sure to place any screws in the small container.
  4. For power mirrors, make sure to unplug any wiring connecting the mirror assembly to the electrical system.
  5. Use the socket wrench to loosen and remove any bolts securing the mirror assembly. Make sure to place the bolts in the small container.
  6. If there are any screws still securing the mirror assembly, use the screwdriver to loosen and remove them. Place any screws in the small container.
  7. Hold the mirror with one hand, while prying open any plastic tabs still securing the mirror with the other. Set the mirror aside and get the replacement mirror.
  8. Snap the replacement mirror into place.
  9. Reverse steps 1-6 to further secure the replacement mirror to your vehicle.
