The first generation of Ford Rangers with the 2.3 litre four cylinder engine mated with a 5-Speed manual trans is one of the most reliable, economical, and easy to work on vehicles Ford ever produced.  Most parts are available at your local auto parts store or salvage yard.  If you are looking for a fast, flashy, or modern truck, look elsewhere.  If you need a good solid work truck that wont let you down, get one of these trucks.  I have a small motorcycle shop and I beat the heck out of this truck every day on the harsh and unforgiving NYC streets towing motorcycles, parts, and running daily errands.  My '88 Ranger is one tough little truck.  I've thought about selling it many times but I would always come to my senses and realize its stupid to let her go.  I've seen these trucks go well past 250,000 miles and still be able to get the job done.  Mine has 156,000 miles and I'll keep her till the wheels fall off!!  I get 20-25 mpg on the regular even with a 800lb payload.  If you can get the later model Rangers with fuel injection ('86-'88) and beware of ones with heavy body rust, try to go south or anywhere the roads dont get salted.  Problem areas are cab corners, door jambs,  firewall rot, and the frame over the rear axle.  If you find one with no rust, buy it! Most people will let them go for next to nothing because they need brake work, new shocks, or a fuel pump.  So keep your eyes peeled if you need a good truck on the cheap!!
