I just got done working on a Old Triumph Spitfire , the person that has the car had changed the carbs out from One Stromberg Zenith ,to a set of 2 SU carb set up that actually fit the car ,Well the SUes are a EZ to work on carb and well made ,and the Zenith carb was chocked to death with air pollution junk that did not work anyhow . The problem really was not the single carb so much ,it was lack of understanding Maintenance of the carb . To make things much harder the guy tossed the ,so called junk Zenith in the trash .Now Gone .WOW .Even if you got a car from another owner or motorcycle . Get every part and find storage space at all cost .Tag parts as what they are ,put in Plastic bags .Then in a nice box and Mark the box as to what is in that Box . If some one tries to sell you a Car, Motorcycle, something with a motor , that has stuff missing ! It better be a Race Car or motorcycle with a track record , Or deduct money to replace the missing stuff . Air pump -$300 .Set of SUes changed to Webers -$1200 Lucas generator changed to a Delco -$350 .The worst thing changing to a larger carb is the engine was not designed for a carb of that size . The builders of the car work vary hard to make things match so the end product works for the every day drivers . So when a person starts to rod out a car ,if you change one thing you must start modifications on many other systems to made your new wonder change work . Just like dumping race type oil in your street car ,will not make the engine run like a race car , Change from a small carb to a large carb will not make a problem with the fuel system go away .But what it will do is create a lot of new problems . And most of the problems I have seen" the people attacked the carbs when the Electric system was the real problem almost Always the case" . Lucis Distributors will work ok ,but if you must have Electronic ,don't trash it ,add to it . A MSD 6 unit will work very well with the old Lucis points ,and the points will almost last forever . And the MSD will fire real hard . I see people replacing the entire Lucis system to something else at a real high cost .And it dose not work right or the same ever again . When I do something to a peice of equipment as a repair, and it is not working ,things are marked as to how things came apart and I restore it back .And then try some other thing . Things don't get out of hand that way . And if you remove something don't toss it in the dumpster save it for the OEM restoration that will make your vintage car worth more down the road some day .Never Toss a Part that was working for a maybe better part, that may not work the same later . Please vote on my guide like it yes or no if I see a lot of pos votes I will up date this .
