This guide will give the user basic guidelines involved in buying a 1968 to 1970 Dodge Charger grille. For the 1968 Charger grille the major elements of the piece are the 1.) center section 2.) headlight doors, obviously one right and one left, and the bezel that headlight door mounts to, 3.) the aluminum and stainless pieces that trim out the grille, as well as special emblems, i.e. the r/t emblem and the word "Charger". The trim pieces for the 68 model include two long pieces of aluminum that run along the top and bottom edge and the two outer"eyebrow" pieces which are stainless. Knowing all the pieces of the assembly will help the user determine what kind of pieces he will need to restore the grille. Most of the trim pieces are easily found on ebay or from aftermarket suppliers. The components of the 1969 model grille have some differences, primarily in the center grille section. The center grille section in 1969 was split creating an "I" appearance, the center section has three vents on either side of the "I" section. On top of this section sits the " I" trim piece, this piece has a slight crease in the center and small tabs on all four corners to allow the piece to be not only bolted from the back to the center grille section, but also tucked underneath the trim sections that go across the top and bottom of the grille. The 69 retains the eyebrow moldings on the outer edges of the grille, but the pieces that go along the top and bottom consist of four straight aluminum pieces. The trim pieces for the 69 model are also readily available on ebay, as well as aftermarket suppliers, I will discuss prices later in the guide. For the 1970 model the grille changes rather significantly. The outer edge of the grille assembly is surrounded by the large rounded bumper. The 1970 model does have headlight doors and a center section, but the design of the grid is much different. The headlight doors and outer bezels of the 69 and 68 models do interchange, as do the outer eyebrow trim moldings. The center sections can be swapped between the 68 and 69 models, but would not be correct for restoration purposes. For the entire grille assembly( the piece that hangs the grille to the car and holds the headlights and vacuum actuators) the 68 and 69 are interchangable, the 70 is not due to the new bumper configuration, and the fact that the headlight doors became electronically controlled. Prices for these grilles vary dramtically between the years and shape of the grille your going after. The pricest seems to be the grille for the 1969 model and due to the "I" piece molding on the front, which alone can go for as much as $200.00. The 68 model grilles seem to be second, with the 70 model next. For a 69 model expect to pay between 500.00 and 1500.00 dollars. Slightly under that you'll find the 68 and 70 model grilles. When buying a grille consider your application. These grilles are more than 30 years old and some show it, you should talk to a professional before considering a fixer upper grille. If your looking for a showcar grille a fixer upper can take a signifcant amount of time and money to get it looking show quality. The plastic repair is tedious and fragile due to the frequent broken teeth that make up the grille. If your looking for a show quality grille I would suggest buying a grille that isn't going to take much work and pay extra, after all due to the popularity of B and E body cars this has unfortunately become a rich man's game. On a higher note there are great products that are availble to due these plastic repairs, I suggest you get some information from your local auto paint jobber, and then decide if you up to the task. Very few things on any car can't be fixed, it just takes alot of time or alot of money, or both and these grilles are new exception. No matter what you decide the grille of the late 60 and 70 model Charger are some of the most distinct among American muscle cars.
