What's a SCRAP ROD???

O.K.... Before you start laughing, think about this. You want a hot rod or street rod or rat rod and the price to buy one is absolutely out of this world.(just look at the ones for sale right now on e-bay,and you'll choke on your own tongue). So you think to yourself, no big deal I'll build one. Well if your lucky enough to hit the lottery it may just happen but I would'nt hold my breath.

The price of these vehicles are sky rocketing at a pace the majority of people can't keep up with and building'em now a days is just as expensive. This is where the Scrap Rod part comes in. I have built all kinds of cars from Hot Rods to Liquid Hot Rods,(Race Boats) and have found that building hot rod looking cars from old scrap parts is not only fun, but cheap to do.

For example:

I started with a G.M.C. S-15 two wheel drive roller frame I recieved for free along with a 1953 FORD F-100 pick up cab.I fabed some body mounts from a Chevy full size truck to the frame to make the cab sit where I wanted and presto-instant modern hot rod had begun.

Next was the motor.Since the original engine was a six cylinder and was already gone, I then installed a CHEVY 350 right in the stock motor mounts with no modification or problems, along with the350 tranny.(You will need to put in your own tranny mount in).

From this point on, all that is left to do is use old parts you can find at junk yards or here on e-bay in the vintage section for as cheap as you can get them. Most of what I used was from the 30's so I could make it look as old as possible.

The truck Im about to finish looks very cool and the total cost at present is at $3700.00 and looks as if it cost $10,000.00 to build. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to build one of these, but you will need a lot of friends with talents, should you choose to do it.

By now you have figured out why they are called scrap rods. This new style of hot rod is spreading on the west coast since all the good old cars are gone out here. The fashion of the fifties and the style of these new cars and truck are making a big statement, since current car makers can't build a car worth a dime and don't have any intention on "making'em like they use to".

The best part of this is, even if you weren't able to grow up in the 50's.... like me, here's your chance.(or second chance for the lucky others). So don't just sit around doing nothing, build a scrap rod, you'll be glad you did. The fun you get out of a project like this, money can't buy!!

You will start to see these new types of vehicles in alot of hot rod magazines because of the abillity to create so many wild ideas with todays modern technolligies, such as D.V.D. players, C.D. changers, Navagation systems and so on. The sky's the limit and so is the creativaty.

Well I hope this log gets you motivated at the least, and starts you building away. Most of all I would like to say,This is a great way to get the whole family involved in a cheap project that will change your lives forever.I know this for a fact as my sister is now starting her second hot/scrap rod and is out of controll having fun doing it. As a matter of fact, she has been contacted for a photo shoot on her last scrap rod to be published in a magazine that will be showing the truck next month.

Good luck to all, and i hope this was interesting.
