I recently purchased an ATV from someone from ebay, and found out it didn't have a title. I recieved a Bill Of Sale instead of the title, which I thought was all good, BOY WAS I WRONG !!! My family & I were riding it it my own yard, and not bothering anyone, and someone called the police on us. The police asked why I did not have the registration sticker on the ATV, and I replied "what sticker"? I was then told that in my state it has to be registered, and I get a sticker that is good for 5 years. The officer then asked if I had proof of ownership for the ATV, and I showed him the Bill Of Sale. He checked the Vin # on the frame of the ATV, and the one on the Bill Of Sale, then he ran the Vin # to the ATV. The ATV came back as been stolen, in Sept, of 06. all of a sudden I was in a heep of trouble, and all I did was purchase this from a person on Ebay, who told me that the title had been lost by the guy he purchased it from, and he had got a Bill Of Sale, also. Since I had only had the ATV for 4 days, and had a notorized Bill Of Sale, stating that I had just bought it, I was not charged with stolen property, or recieving stolen property. They then had a flatbed tow-truck come and take the ATV, and not a thing I could do to stop them, so I was out on the deal. The officers asked me a ton of questions, and told me that someone would be in contact with me. Meanwhile, I am scared to death that I am going to jail, for just buying something fun for my family to enjoy. A few hours later, a detective gave me a call. He asked me a ton of questions, just like the officers did when they came to my house. I then found out that it was not going to fall back on me, for the stolen ATV, that I had no idea was stolen to begin with. The detective told me that if an ATV does not come with a title, Never except a Bill Of Sale, without calling your local Law Enforcement first, and having the  Vin # ran before you purchase the ATV, cause if it don't have a title, chances are, they have something to hide, and the ATV could be stolen. They can tell you if you have any red flags on it, and if it is ok to purchase. If the person is not willing to give you the Vin #, then that should throw up a flag, " Don't Buy This ", right then and there. I have learned a valuable lesson here, and hope that maybe this might help some others from the same thing happening to them. I was really lucky that no charges were brought up on me, but things could have went a whole different direction.
