After a couple weeks of thunderous complaints from sellers, on books, DVDs, software and video games.
"We heard your comments about the need for media and category-specific pricing," said president of eBay Global Marketplace Lorrie Norrington in an all-hands message. "Today, I am pleased to announce we are accelerating our plan to phase-in category-specific pricing for media."
Under the new plan, the upfront listing fees (or insertion fees) on new media goods will be lowered as much as 50 percent, depending on the price of the item. The insertion fee on a $10 to $24.99 item, for example, will be 35 cents, down from 60 cents.
An eBay spokesman said the move has been in the works for quite some time, but the change was expedited based on user feedback. (It also, happily, comes less than a week before to protest changes to the fee structure and feedback system.)
"We have been planning on moving to category-specific pricing on media for awhile now," says eBay spokesman Usher Lieberman. "We listened to our sellers, and this was an opportunity to show we can move quickly and be responsive, so we accelerated our time table."
