I am not the first to write a guide regarding drop shipping items nor do I expect to be the last, with that said, this is my story and I hope and pray a warning to my fellow ebay sellers to beware. In an attempt to find a reputatble company with a high quality of merchandise and superior customer service I ventured into the drop shipping arena. I am a seller on ebay for nine years and I began back in the days before photos were on the items and everyone had to give an excellent description, before the days of paypal and printing postage at home. Ebay was a means for me to work at home at my convenience to fund my homeschooling financial needs, curriculum purchases and activities.
I recently began an ebay store and have prided myself on offering great items at a great price which have come from my personal collections, thrift shops, yard sales and estate sales. These items have been hand picked by me, cleaned, restored, photographed and listed with care, carefully packed and shipped. I love my ebay store and my customers and realize that it takes a great amount of faith to purchase something online and with a 100 percent positive feedback I am not about to do anything to violate a persons trust.
I began to become interested in drop shipping with doba, they are ebay certified after all, ebay cares about its customers, its sellers and I assumed that they would be the perfect choice to supplement my inventory. I have never done anything regarding my business on impulse and take my ebay business and buyer satisfaction very seriously. I signed on for the free trial and immediately received a call from doba to pay in full for the year at an enormous discount. While this should have been a warning flag for me, I took the bait, they are ebay certified after all.
I have lost money on ebay listing fees of items that did not sell, most of the items are listed at above retail prices elsewhere and this is their so-called wholesale price. I have had items red flagged by ebay for excessive shipping amounts and have had items removed for intellectual property rights violation. I have done all of the extensive dropshipping education, know my niche and marketplace and still could not find products that I could list at a profit. Listing items at the suggested retail doba price placed them higher than other marketplaces, listing them at the wholesale price hoping that the bidding would go higher results in a loss due to the ebay and paypal fees. Many items that were successfully listed were shortly thereafter no longer available for sale from doba although there was a large amount in their inventory when listed resulting in my ending auctions early. Some of the items listed dropped their graphic at the doba site leaving the listing without an image. Of the two products that I purchased myself they both arrived without a packing slip. The customer service representative argued that the wholesaler yearly fee is worth the price for shopping for your own self at wholesale, however these products are available online elsewhere for less with no yearly fee.
Upon contacting doba with my request to cancel membership I was informed that they would not do that but would not renew my registration in the new year. I received a complete run around and was told that I must not have done my "niche and marketplace" education and many are making money as power sellers with doba. If I listed 100 items every month for three months in a row from doba I would be a power seller also even if they didn't sell, that is a misleading statement.
I then went to the Better Business Bureau and found that there are over 320 complaints filed against this company and many more reports at rip-off reports.com. I have requested that my registration fee be refunded on a prorated basis, something that doba has refused to do. I have also recieved numerous phone calls from third party companies "on behalf of doba" offering me additional services and they did not take no for an answer nicely.
Please investigate any dropshipping program, if you are reading this and have had a positive experience with doba that is wonderful and I am always glad when any ebayer does well. As for me it was a completely disappointing experience, I am completely disillusioned with dropshipping as a whole and write this guide only to advise that you do your homework and do not jump into any relationship with a "wholesaler", especially if you are pressured to pay up front.
