While others have said the cup is messy and leaks, I agree, it does if not inserted properly. However, when in properly (it takes a bit of practice) this thing is magic. No leaks, no mess, just a catchall for 'Aunt Flo'   Not a problem using in public either, just do your thing in the bathroom stall (I like to carry baby wipes in my bag to help tidy up a bit) but generally, you don't need to empty it very often in public. I'm also a sufferer of toxic shock syndrom and this little gem gives me back the freedom and comfort of tampons, which I cannot use any longer. When in properly, you don't feel it at all! Lets also not forget this is the answer for environmental waste too!
