Why does your driftwood sink? I recover all my old growth cypress driftwood from underwater called sinker cypress, it's been in the swamps underwater for 100's of years, the pieces I keep for aquarium driftwood use are cleaned, boiled and placed in #1 tank for 60 days with a continuous flow of water, then move to tank #2 with a continuous flow of water until sold.
Why do you use the 2 tanks? Because I don't want to sell a piece of driftwood I just pulled from the swamps, also this way I know the cypress will leach very little.
How long does it take to rewaterlog cypress driftwood? Cypress when dry is very light weight and it becomes waterlogged more slowly than other wood. Once cypress is dry it takes months even years to rewaterlog.
Why use cypress driftwood? The legendary hardiness makes cypress resistance to decay.
Is cypress a soft or hardwood? Cypress is technically a soft wood, but it is graded as a hardwood by the lumber association. Although it has needle like leaves typical of softwood, cypress loses its needles during the winter.
What's the color of cypress? Yellow blondish tone with reddish cinnamon, chocolate or olive hues from being underwater. Weathing cypress is grey or charcoal. black, rare no, but old growth cypress is very rare & collectable.
How long have you been collecting & selling cypress? Many, many years over 60.
