Inside Windows 2000 Professional or any of the versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista it's very easy to designate one of several installed printers at the one you'd like every application to find first (e.g. the 'default' printer). Begin by selecting:
[Start]-->[Settings]-->[Printers and Faxes]
...to display a window of your available printers. Then click once with the 'Right' mouse button on the printer entry that you'd like to make the default to display it's properties menu. Select the properties option list command [Set as Default Printer].
That's it! And of course, you can change default printers at any time..
Hint #1
We prefer to set the 'Printers an Faxes' window in [View]-->[Details] mode where you can quickly see what printers are available and the number of documents they are currently processing. It's also a good place to begin troubleshooting printer problems.
Hint #2
We routinely install a freeware product called PDF reDirect (Made by EXP Systems) for our clients who do not have other PDF making software. You can download, install and use this software just like a printer, but instead of printed documents, it generates PDF files. PDF reDirect actually let's you create a new PDF or append to an existing one, and it's very straight-forward to use. When installed it becomes an alternate printer on your list of 'Printers and Faxes'.
