QUALITY

First thing to consider when buying any Ammonite fossil is what kind of quality you are after, most ammonite  fossils are of lower quality and found all over the world, you will find they  have little or no color , black with some red and maybe green when it is held at an angle or they will be a milky white. most of these types are coming from madagascar and Russia,,i have seen these at trade shows for around 10 dollars a pound. the size of the pieces and other factors will dictate what it is most likely worth, there does not seem to be a set standard for the price, it is just a matter of who is selling it. with stuff like this, i have seen some high prices before. and they do make nice conversation pieces, i have also seen some of them turned into jewelery boxs and these are in the store for up to 4000 dollars canadian. But the  thing that really made ammonite popular is the high end gem fossils and gemstones from alberta Canada, this is where you see the real bright colors of red green, blue, yellows and sometimes a bit of pink, very often compared to the real expensive opal that you never see just anywhere that sells at about 5000 dollars a square inch and higher,

PRICES

Now lets talk about price for these high end gem fossils.4 to 6 inch fossils would wholesale around $2000 to $4000 if it has 90% gemstone on it, these little guys are expensive because they are so rare in these sizes,

next we have 6 to 10 inch, these would be around $3000 to $10,000.

next we have 10 to 15 inchs at around  $7000 to $20,000 and 15 to 22 inchs would be about $15,000 to $50,000,,all these prices are US Dollars and wholesale, retail would be more than double.

EXAMPLE

The fossil on the left at 18 inchs would run about 25,000 to 30,000 USD.and the one in the middle at 13 inchs would be 14,000 USD,.The last one on the right could be as high as 200,000 just in the value of the gemstone itself. Now as for the name Ammolite. It  is the name that was  given to the aragonite found on the unique ammonites from alberta.back in the 60s. the name ammolite was established by Dr Guebelin of the international colored gemstone association. And refers only to the shell of the ammonites of Alberta. The Madagascar and other various Ammonites should not be refered to as ammolite as it does not have the same properties as the Alberta Ammonites. i hope this answers some questions and helps you to find that perfect stone
