As both a student and collector of the paranormal for many years, I have had countless paranormal and haunted items pass through my collection. This guide is to briefly share what I have learned about haunted items and to point out some of the signs of questionable paranormal items.
Embodied and energetic objects date back to the beginning of time in the form of spiritual and religious statues, icons, and devotional objects, which essentially took on a life of their own based on the rituals and spiritual observations of their creators. Throughout history, various cultures and practitioners of magic have utilized different types of spirit vessels-from fetishes and dolls to statues and gris gris bags-as a conduit to higher states of consciousness and contact with deities or elemental spirits. Many cultures, religions, and occult systems honor the ability of spiritual beings to imbue their essence in devotional items or other objects. There are many practices for imbuing an object, from a simple prayer to more elaborate rituals. Both white magic and black magic practitioners have various methods of turning items into power objects. The ancient occult practice of necromancy for example, summons and controls the spirits of the dead and sometimes seeks to imbue and bind them into objects. This is a very dangerous and dark practice and strays from the realm of the peaceful and benevolent. The legend of the genie binders is another implementation of these types of practices - as is the installation of murtis in Hinduism - where it is believed that the actual deity takes up residence in the statue of it's likeness. Both of these practices are extremely rare, and these special objects are heavily guarded and not often made available to the public.
Haunt: To inhabit, visit, or appear to in the form of a ghost or other supernatural being.
An item that is referred to as haunted is not necessarily haunted by a deceased human spirit. Items can be "haunted" with various energies from deity and icon energies to energies of elementals, nature spirits and faeries (rare). Psychometry is a form of ESP in which those with a high degree of psychic ability can tune into the essence of a person by making physical contact with an object that belonged to them. This is because each object on the material plane holds a charge or an energy that reveals its history on a subtle psychic vibration. Further, everything in the universe contains its own unique vibration and resonance. Matter is comprised of various waves and frequencies. If you were to take two violins that were tuned the same, and you plucked the string on one, it will release a wave of sound energy that will trigger the same string of the other violin to vibrate and produce the same sound. This naturally occurring phenomenon is called RESONANCE. We are literally affecting everything around us all of the time through our thoughts, actions, and movements. When the human spirit passes from the body, it is still able to affect things in this manner if it chooses to. Haunted objects obtain their energy because of this type of natural phenomenon.
Because it normally takes a tremendous amount of energy and time for an object to grow heavily affected, it is common to find that most paranormal and haunted objects are antiques. It is only natural that an object that has been in existence for a very long time has picked up many different energies or built upon the energies it initially began with. This does not mean that most antiques are haunted, but that an antique is more likely to be haunted than a non-antique. I have had very few new dolls in my collection that have displayed any kind of dramatic paranormal activity. In contrast, I have seen a large amount of antique dolls with very active energy.
It is also worth noting that while there are many powerful energetic objects in the world, as well as many haunted dolls, they are very rare and not as common as you may think. I have been collecting for over 30 years and it has taken me that long to build a large collection of tried and tested paranormally affected items. I would estimate that only one out of every 500 antique dolls on the planet are significantly and genuinely haunted. On the other hand, objects of a spiritual/occult nature (such as religious statues, icons, symbols and occult objects) tend to be paranormally affected much more frequently, simply because they were attached to and represent powerful archetypes and energies to begin with.
I would like to close by offering two important tips for distinguishing between genuinely haunted objects and potential scams.
1. PAY ATTENTION TO PHOTOS: Haunted objects do not always necessarily display visual phenomenon for the camera. It is also highly unlikely that the doll/object is always ready and willing to create unusual displays for the camera. If phenomenon is recorded, it is usually in the form of orbs, ectoplasm mist, shadows and successful EVP recordings. If what you are viewing looks like double vision or the item moving, this is usually a simple camera trick created by moving the item back and forth while snapping the photo. Streaks of light, which look like mini lightening trails can also be easily created by slowing down your shutter speed and moving lights around the object. Grab a camera and experiment for yourself! Then, spend some time on websites looking at paranormal photos. Eventually you will be able to spot fake, dramatic photos a mile away!
2. BEWARE OF BIG CLAIMS: Haunted dolls and other haunted items usually don't have the ability to grant wishes for money or other material things. Haunted items usually host trapped, confused (and sometimes unfriendly) spirits. It is very rare to find a higher spirit trapped in a doll. A trapped and confused attachment spirit does not have the power or strength to affect the physical world by granting wishes or luck. If you are looking for power objects to help with manifesting desires, look toward occult objects or spells by trustworthy practitioners who follow ancient methods of concocting blends and manifestation techniques. I have only had one doll in all of my years of collecting that had a history of granting wishes, but that was with a price. I recently sold this doll on Ebay, as it was very uncomfortable for me to have in my home. Haunted dolls can be comforting and sometimes offer protection, but it is a rare doll that has control over the events in the material world. Be leery of dolls that are claimed to change your life and bring you love and riches.
