Do you have unclaimed property that you don't know about? Last year over 1.3 million claims were paid to owners totaling at least $1.2 billion.
What is unclaimed property?
Unclaimed property (sometimes referred to as abandoned) refers to accounts in financial institutions and companies that have had no activity generated or contact with the owner for one year or longer. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed dividents or payroll checks, refunds, traveler's checks, trust distributions, unredeemed money orders or gift certificates (in some states), insurance payments or refunds and life insurance policies, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments, utility security deposits, mineral royalty payments, and contents of safe deposit boxes.
NAUPA is the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. They recommend that you begin your search by checking the website at missing money. This is a fairly simple process, but not all states participate in this site at this time. You can also go to the unclaimed website which will allow you to link to each state individually. I can not provide any links outside of ebay in this guide, but if you do a google search on any of these terms you should find the proper web sites to begin your search. Be sure to check any states in which you may have a connection. This includes states where distant relatives may have resided, because there could be assets that were held by these relatives which you are now entitled to. Be sure to check for minor children as well! My 9 year old son found he had money coming to him from another state, boy was he excited!
This is FREE. You do NOT have to pay anyone to find or file for your unclaimed assets! There are companies out there who will charge you a fee to "help" you recover lost funds...it's NOT necessary. The process is simple and free. Good Luck!
