SOME OF YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS...BUT ITS THE TRUTH..........
Last FRIDAY, ( LATE OCTOBER, 2008 ) I was in a local coin shop searching through a large "junk" bin full of 90% SILVER U.S.. coins , ...there were several rolls nicer grade ROOSEVELT, AND Mercury Dimes present in this bin, as well as numberous WALKER, FRANKLIN , and 1964 Kennedy Halves, also , many silver WASHINGTON quarters .....i was CHERRY-PICKING from this bin, better grade , common date Mercury dimes , i bought about 80 dimes , I also bought some storage tubes for these nice Merc. dimes,,,and headed home......for fun, i was looking at the different dates...who knows ?? maybe there would be a 1945 micro-s or a nicer grade pre-1940 s date in this group...as i got to the last few coins , there were four 1942 dated dimes.....this is where it gets interesting.....something looked a little funny about one of the '42 dimes, i thought it might be dirt or even some kind of damage to the coin, i was thinking, "oh well. i only paid .85 cents for these each, no big deal ...right???...i put the coin up to my magnifier...........MY JAW HIT THE FLOOR....In my hot little hands was ( THIS IS THE HONEST TO GOODNESS TRUTH... ) A 42/41-P overdate MERCURY DIME IN FINE-VF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most people go their whole lives and never find something like this ....woww !! i ve shown this piece to a few coin dealers at a local weekend coin show ,the approximate value of this coin in that grade is between $450.00- $600.00 !!!!!!!! ( IF SLABBED, PERHAPS EVEN MORE ) woww ...now , its very obvious, that it wasnt known to the dealer this piece was present, in fact, who ever sold the small hoard of silver to that coin dealer also, didnt know it was there....GOOD GRIEF !! I didnt know it was there until i went to put the other merc dimes into a tube roll ...i ve heard of people buying large bags of merc. dimes ( you know $1,000 face value bags ) and finding worn 1921-P and 1921-D dated coins...but man !!!!!!! never an 42/41 over date... ( These are super-rare, there are no mintage figures, the exact number of this famous error is unknown ) so, one might ask, what do i plan to do with this coin ? well, since i ve recently begun to collect merc. dimes again...im keeping it , i thought about selling it and i may still do that, but i ve thought, when will i ever find something like that again ??its not so much the money, but the rarity of this piece, i mean, as stated above, there are no precise production numbers on this coin, no knows exactly how many there are ( Its very possible this paticular merc. dime has gone undetected all of these years until I FOUND IT Which makes it even more special .... ) .....I believe it to be rarer than the 1916-D and i would rather have this one before the '16-D. another point to consider, both overdates ( 42/41-P, and the 42/41-D are different ), the Philly overdate is more obvious ( You can tell without a magnifier...it looks like " 19412" ) and the Denver overdate is a little harder to see, side by side you can see a definite difference ...so, a word to the wise...keep looking double check all 1942 mercury dimes you come across ...you never know what you may find...GOD BLESS YOU ALL, BEST OF LUCK, Danny Anable ...CANADACOINNUT ...OCTOBER, 2008
