SEW-ART'S INVISIBLE NYLON THREAD

By Patricia Merrell

THIS IS A WONDERFUL THREAD !

So OK, what's so special about our Invisible Nylon Thread?

We are quite proud of the fact that we were the first company to sell this type thread. That was many years ago, and as you know, we have been duplicated scores of times.

So, what's so great about our thread?  Well, for starters, it is (and always has been) a very smooth, thin monofilament. The size is .004. That is about as fine as a hair. If you drop a strand on the floor, you have to really strain to find it! This is true of both the clear and the smoke. And it is so pliable that you can stitch a neck seam with it and never worry about getting "poked".

For another thing, it is Nylon! I know that some people would like you to think that because it is made of Nylon it has lots of problems. Well, let's talk about these things.

  • It does not turn yellow in your quilting or sewing. I haven't seen any of my stitching turning yellow. And I've been using it since the 1970's.
  • It does not shine in your stitching. There is something about this particular thread which makes it seem to disappear completely when it is stitched into the fabric.
  • It will not melt when it is pressed. Of course, if you hit it with a HOT iron, it will crinkle and probably disappear. But I have pressed many items with a steam iron, and the thread is just as strong after the pressing as before.

So, there are all these thing it WON'T do. What WILL it do?

  • Well, first: It has some stretch, so it will give and take with your stitching and the fabric.
  • The thread really does seem to disappear in some applications. The Clear is excellent for white and light colored fabrics. The Smoke is great with dark fabrics. And note, I said "Smoke". It is dark, but it isn't black, because there might be a chance that a color that dark would show too much of medium colored fabrics.
  • This thread is excellent for Invisible Applique techniques. You can stitch around the outside edge of an applique with a small zigzag, and the stitching just seems to disappear. This is one of Harriet Hargraves favorite things to do with this thread.
  • Quilting is another popular way to use this thread. Since it seems to disappear, it is a good choice for several methods of quilting. And it is strong enough so that it doesn't break if the quilt gets used, but not so strong that it is going to tear the fabric. It works really well with stitch in the ditch quilting. I like it for free-motion quilting as well. Many machine quilters love this thread!
  • Another use is machine couching strings of beads and attaching individual beads by machine with this thread. The beads look like they are floating on your fabric. But they can be quite closely stitched down and the thread will not show as you stitch from one point to another. It is fun to do, and everyone is confused as to how you got those beads to stay on!
  • Speaking of Couching. If you want to apply heavy threads without the anchoring thread showing, this is the thread to use. I have done this when I was using such decorative threads that I didn't want to distract from them with the anchoring thread.
  • Then, there are the Serger and sewing applications. You can finish hems and seams, make a rolled seam, finish seam edges, and much more and never have to worry about whether you are going to get "stuck" by a seam end.
