Developed by Joseph Pilates more than 80 years ago, Pilates teaches you to move from the core muscles in your abdomen and how to strengthen them. After taking his first class a few years ago, personal trainer and yogi Jonathan Uria was so inspired that he eventually combined the two disciplines, wrote the book YOGILATES and founded a studio in New York by the same name. Here, he explians how the two disciplines complement each other.
WHAT YOGA BRINGS TO PILATES.
In Pilates, you're typically taught to strengthen the core muscles from a reclined position. Yoga teaches core strength and awareness in standing and balancing poses, such as Tree or Handstand. Also, Pilates practice can tighten the hip flexors along the front of the hips, and many yoga postures stretch these muscles.
WHAT PILATES BRINGS TO YOGA.
The strength you build in your abdomen and back through Pilates will help support you in inversions, balancing postures, and standing postures. In Warrior II, for example, your core strength will help ground you through your feet and lift you through your abdomen, creating a omre expansive, expressive pose.
