X-Men Trade Paperback Guide Part I

For those more interested in reading the comic books rather than collecting them, trade paperbacks are probably your best choice.  With trade paperbacks, or Tpbs, you get a collection of issues is book form.  They are usually cheaper than the collection of comic books would be and they are in a more "heavy-duty" form.  There have been many X-Men spinoff comic books, so I am going to try and organize that also.  The titles of the Tpbs will be shown along with what issues it contains, in parentheses.  Since there becomes so many titles and they are running all at the same time, I have put them in the best read order that I could.  The dates included below the main title at the top are the dates the issues were originally released, not the date the trade paperbacks were released.  Some of these are out of print but can easily be found on eBay.  These can get to be a little spendy but you can find most of these for 30% or 40% off on the internet.

X-Men Vol. 1 (Uncanny X-Men)

1963-1991

This is the original X-Men series started in 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.  Some of these trade paperbacks are crossovers, meaning other Marvel title's or X-Men related title's comic book issues were involved in the X-Men's story.  The gap between Uncanny X-Men #66 and #94 was because the series was cancelled and all the issues between those were reprints of earlier issues.  Some of these trade paperbacks contain the same issues, ex. Omnibus, which one you chose to buy is up to you.  Marvel Masterworks and Omnibus are all hardcover.

X-Men Vol. 2

1991-2001

This series was created in 1991 by Chris Claremont.  There were so many X-Men that they decided to have two main ongoing X-Men titles to give all the characters space.  Some of these are crossovers are contain issues from X-Men Vol. 1 (Uncanny X-Men).  Included in this are the Age of Apocalypse Tpbs.  The Age of Apocalypse was a huge X-Men event that took place throughout the four months following the LegionQuest crossover.  It was about an alternate universe where Professor Xavier was killed before founding the X-Men and Magneto ended up founding them.  The Age of Apocalypse world is where an evil mutant named "Apocalypse" has taken over a large part of the world.  Also, one X-Men Vol. 1 (Uncanny X-Men) Tpb is included here because it takes place in somewhere between "X-Men: Mutant Genesis" and "X-Men: X-Cutioner's Song" and so I did not want to create a new section just for that one.  The last Tpb is an "X-Men Unlimited" one.  It takes place somewhere around there but the issues spread over a few years.  The "X-Men vs. Apocalypse" Tpbs aren't a sure thing.  I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be coming out some time next spring, but I'm not 100%.

This was another new series started by Joss Whedon. It starts right after the events of New X-Men and really takes the series in a new direction.
