How to write an effective sales copy.

Your sales copy is more important than you think

What is the "sales copy"?  Well, copy is just another word for "description".  So its your ebay Item description in this case.  As important as it is, most people fail to put any reasonable amount of effort into it, then they wonder why they cant sell anything.

But first, let me give you an introduction to myself.  My name is Nate and I am 19 years old.  I have been selling on ebay for about 3 years now.  Over the years, I have went through several different product markets and have come to realize a few simple things that universally apply to selling.

Your copy is like a salesman at a car lot.  Let's say you go to the car lot and don't know anything about cars, but there was no one there.  Or there were a few sales men there, but they were dressed like they came straight out of the 80's with checkard vans, bad breathe and messy hair.  And on top of that, they pronounced things wrong, and couldn't clearly portray a message.

Would you ever go back to this car lot.  HELL NO!  You would run and run as fast as you could.  So, why do people think its ok to put 500 different colors, have misspellings, and terrible grammar on their auctions?

Rule number 1.

Always have a main heading, something that literally PULLS the reader in.  Something catchy, short, and to the point.  It must be in BIG BOLD letters.

It MUST be "above the fold".  That is another marketing term for the concept of everything on the page you see BEFORE you have to scroll down for the first time.  So this would be as soon as your item description starts.

Many people take a glance at the top, and if its not what they want to see, they immediately leave.  I'm not exaggurating either!  Even if what you are selling is the exact perfect match to what that person was looking for, they don't care because it didnt "look right".

Right below the main headline, you should have a subheadline that is just slightly smaller font and continues on the point of the main headline.

Take a look at my auction and you'll see what I mean, just click HERE.

Rule number 2.

Do NOT use stupid flashing, twirling graphics of money signs, smiley faces, etc.  Yeah it may seem nice, but it devalues the CONTENT of your sales copy.  Only use graphics that truly benefit the reader.

Rule number 3.

Keep the color variation down!  It's cool to use a few main colors to EMPHASIZE your main points...BUT do flood your page with so many colors it looks like a childs pinyata!

Black text for the copy.  Red or blue headlines.

Use a yellow highlighting for VERY important sentences.  Keep the yellow highlighting to one sentence max per paragraph.

Take a look at my auction by clicking HERE  to get an idea of what I've been talking about.

Rule number 4.

Long copy vs short copy?  Long copy will ALWAYS outsell short copy.  Meaning, a long drawn out but INFORMATIVE copy will always sell better than 1 huge run on paragraph.

Several pages works great.  Of course, I realize that its not always more effective to use a 10 page copy, but the more information you can give, the more you can hype someone up, THE MORE YOU BUILD TRUST WITH YOUR POTENTIAL CUSTOMER....the more sales you will make!

Long copy gives you an opportunity to build a sort of relationship with your customer.  Telling a story about an item, the events that lead up to your aquisition of the product you are selling (for unique items).  Are you getting the idea here?

Rule number 5.

OFFER A REFUND POLICY.  Yes, I know its hard to digest the fact that after you sell it you might have to get it back and be out a few bucks shipping or ebay/paypal fees.  BUT the increase in sales from having a return policy will ALWAYS outweight the money you save by not refunding an item.

Its generally true that the LONGER THE RETURN PERIOD, THE FEWER THE RETURNS.  Yes, you read that right.  A 15-30 return period is okay...but it often puts pressure on the customer to use it right away and test it, when they may not want to use it at this moment, but couldn't pass up buying it right then for whatever reason.

But when you have something like a ONE YEAR return period, people tend to be more relaxed and keep telling them selves "Oh, I have more time before my refund period is up so there's no rush."  Whats great about this is that this takes the pressure off your customer from trying this right away, and gives them time to actually USE your product (whether it be informational or physical), because how else are they going to know if they like it or not!

In my products, I always offer an UNCONDITIONAL 1 YEAR MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.  Sure, there are people who will scam you and ask for a refund immdiately (since i sell digital items), but I get SO many more sales now from this that it doesn't even matter.

Many of my customers email me and tell me how they would have normally never purchased an item like mine, but I built trust and offered an outstanding return policy, so they felt comfortable to do so.

Just take a look at my feedback, it speaks for itself!

---------------------------------------------------------

So that about sums it up.  If I come across any new information, I will definitely update this guide.  But I hope by laying the ideas out here in this guide, and by you checking out my item here for REAL LIVE PROOF,  you can grow to be a better online marketer and make some more money!

Until another day...happy marketing!

The Rich Boy
