Wrathful deities and their direction

The deities are classifiied as peaceful and wrathful according to the Vajrayana Buddhism. The wrathul deities helps to remove or eliminate all sorts of obstacles for the protection of dharma. These wrathful deities have the multiple heads, arms, varying colors. forms carrying different instruments.The Wrathful  deities are worship for the guard and protect. In Sanksrit the Wrathful deiteis are also calle Dharmapala.

In most of the tantric practices of Nepalese Vajrayana Buddhism, the offering and the worship are made with special rites in night times.

 There are many  kinds of  Wrathful deities.Some of them are as follows:

1. Yamantaka: Yamataka presides over the eastern direction and is one of the popular deities of Nepalese
Buddhist Pantheon. He is the emanation of Bodhisattva Manjushree.

2. Vighnantaka: presides over the northern direction and is one of the most popular wrathful deities nepalese pantheon. He has three faces showing green, white and red color.

3. Acala: presides over  the north east corner. He is blue in color and has three faces blue, white  and red. It is said that through his sadhana and worship, Acala will help the practitioner to eliminate disaster of drought, flood and to subdue thieves and enemies.

4. Mahabala:    He has three faces in bkue , white and red colors, six arms and resides in the  north-west.     The Mahabla images are rare found in Nepal and India but they are found in Chinese Collection. However the miniatur paintings of this deity are found in nepalese buddhist monasteries.

5. Prajnantaka: presides over the south direction. He is white in color and have three faces in white,  blue and red.

6. Padmantaka: presides over the west direction. He is red in color. He have three faces in red, blue and white.

7. Takkiraja: is the guardian deity in the south-east corner. He is blue in color- He have three faces in three differnt colors. It is believe that the worship from the Takkraja helps to eliminates disaster, subdues demons and ghosts. In japanese buddhist it is believed that if one recites his mantra for seven times before eating, the eater can escape the danger of food poisining.

8. Niladana: presides over the south-west corner, has three faces in differnt colors.

9. Usnisa:  presides over upper direction . He is yellow in color and have three faces in differnt colors.

10. Sumbharaja: preisdes over the nether world. He is blue in color and have three faces in different colors.
