A renamed medal is one that was originally officially issued to a verified recipient and has had the official naming removed through one of several techniques and a new name is then engraved on it. Sometimes this is done by an authorized recipient when replacing medals and it is sometimes done with intent to defraud other collectors (such as renaming a medal with the details of a Light Brigade charger or a Victoria Cross recipient). The vast majority of British Commonwealth (to include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) medals are originally officially (or regimentally) named. Some USA medals are officially named while others are privately named although the vast majority are unnamed but the problem of renamed USA medals is fairly low.
There are both officially and privately (unofficial) renamed medals. While other countries issue officially named medals, there is a general lack of published data about the naming styles and renaming is an even greater problem than with the British Commonwealth medals.
The style of naming can be verified using standard reference books. Competent sellers will know about renamed medals and it would be wise for the potential buyer to look carefully at this possibility prior to a purchase.
