Rare North American DecoysFolks..the days are gone when you went out to hunt with 50-100 wooden duck decoys. Now its more like 12-20 plastic decoys, depending on where you hunt......What happened to the old wooden relics is quite amazing. They have gone from the hunting camps to the fireplace mantles.40 years ago -picking up a decoy for $20.00 was common,of almost any maker.....Today carvers and collectors alike are focusing on certain makers, and how their carving career developed.Others collectors are buying certain species from a certain province-or state. While some are collecting from the top carvers across North America. What ever course you take-do some research, subscribe to some Decoy Magazines,Research Ebay Decoy -Waterfowl -Sport Sections. Look for-John Smith,Penny,Edwards,Tanner,White,Perry,Obed,Hopkins,May,Fred Nickerson, always a favorite around here, among many Masters.Buy Gary Guyettes Book-on -Decoys., found on Ebay often. Then hit the trails........While a lot of rough-over painted decoys sell for a few hundred dollars,a lot of Vintage Original paint decoys are commanding 4-5 -6 figure prices. One local Decoy just auctioned off for $94,000,some by early carvers -have reached close to $900,000. Builting a collection is easier than you think, theirs still lots out their........Good Luck----Have a great Day.
