This guide is to help you understand what parts make up a wire or spoke wheel. This will explain the different parts of a spoke rim. This applies to any wire/spoke wheels, 100 spoke 150 spoke 180 spoke etc.

First off I will start this by showing you what a wire wheel looks like. Now if you are reading this guide, I am sure you have seen one before, but if not we should start from the begining.

Here is a 14", reverse offset, 100 spoke, wire wheel.

Now to explain the parts...

Sorry for the blurry picture, I couldn't get it to come out clear... Hopefully you can still see it.

Outer:

Anyway... First you have the outer. The outer is the lip of the wheel. Some people will order gold outers. That would mean you would get a gold lip on your wheels.

Nipples:

Second, you have the nipples. These are the small pieces at the outside of each spoke. The nipples are actually what tightens the spokes to the wheel. There is one nipple for every spoke.

Spokes:

This is the obvious one. Spokes are the long, narrow, cylinder shaped parts. The spokes basically hold the wheel together.

Knockoff:

The knockoff is the center cap that holds the wheel securely onto the adapter. They come in many different style, but all do the same duty.

Hub:

The hub is  round dish looking part that sits behind the spokes.

How it works:

The hub sits in the center, the spokes are laced through the hub. One end of the spokes is similar to a nail head (see pic).

The other end of the spoke is threaded. After the spokes are laced through the hub, they are inserted into the holes in the wheel. The nipples are screwed onto the end of each spoke. They are tightened with a special spoke tool. They must all be tightened the same to keep the wheel true (or circle). If some of the spokes aren't tightened correctly, it could cause a wobbly or shakey wheel. Once all the spokes are in the wheel, all the nipples are screwed on and tight, the sealant is put on. The sealant is a special silicone sealant for wheels. The sealant seals all the nipples into the wheel. Which prevents air from leaking out of the wheel when tires are mounted. Once the wheel is assembled, trued, sealed, and inspected it is ready to be boxed up. This is when it needs to find a new home on your vehicle.

Hopefully in this guide you learned more about wire wheels. I hope it can help you appreciate all the work that goes into making shiney wheels for your car. A lot of work goes into each and every set of wire wheels made.
