Winter Solstice - Time for Slowing Down, Solitute & Balance

Winter Solstice is one of four cardinal points marking the main seasonal shifts. The shortest day of the year occurs on Winter Solstice. On the day of Winter Solstice the sun reaches the height of its southern journey forming the shortest and lowest arc.

Each season has its own meanings and customs. Spring is the rebirth of life on earth; Summer speaks of cultivation and fruitfulness. Autumn recognizes harvest and spiritual attunement and Winter is the return of light in the midst of darkness.

As the temperature drops, the days get shorter, animals hibernate and plants begin to die the sun appears so low in the sky it looks as though it will never return. In the growing darkness people contemplate the mysteries of the end of the life cycle.

In many cultures Winter Solstice is the most celebrated time of the year.  In ancient times, rituals and celebrations were created to invite the light to return. Celebrations to bring people together to create hope and generosity emerged all over the world. The essence of this sacred time, Winter Solstice, is a magical period; a turning point from darkness to light.

On Winter Solstice the sun enters the astrological sign of Capricorn which is ruled by the planet Saturn. Saturn represents the 7th day of the week and it is dedicated to sacramental activity, time for solitude, slowing down and rebalancing our lives.

It is widely known that the darkest hour of the night is just before dawn. Here the darkest night of the year holds the promise of the gradual return of light, bringing with it a new cycle of life.

Winter solstice is a highly charged time bringing possibilities of new perceptions, intentions and personal commitments to explore in the New Year.
