The rule of thumb for eating wild berries has been passed down in Indian lore from one generation to the other:
- No white berries
- Some red berries
- Most blue berries
- All black berries
Wild berries abound in many areas and are free for the picking. In some places, the berries have escaped from tame plantings and cover acres of land. Wild blackberries are especially thorny, so wear a long sleeve shirt and gloves when you're gathering these tasty gems. The berries are usually smaller than the tame varieties, and take longer to pick.
If wild berries are found growing next to a public road, be sure and wash them thoroughly before eating them. In many places, the state road service sprays the areas next to the road with a weed killer, and it's possible that the berries have been sprayed as well.
