The biggest cause of failure to an Underground Fence System is the lack of a water tight connection where the wires are spliced together. If water gets into this connection then rapid corrosion will take place and the wire will effectively break.
For anyone who has installed an Underground Fence, trying to find a break in the wire or trying to find the location of a splice once buried in the ground is almost impossible.
Tracking down the break is very time consuming and can be costly if you have to purchase a wire break detector and/or replace the wire. I have known customers who have used standard connectors and have spent many days trying to track down the break only to eventually give up and replace all the wire. Imagine having to dig up and then rebury the wire, this is not something you would want to do for the sake of saving a few dollars.
Make sure that you buy from a fence supplier that ships these waterproof connectors with their kits, there are basically 2 recommended manufacturers, Snaplok and 3M. These manufacturers both offer an excellent product that is designed specifically for low voltage, direct burial appplications. These connectors are filled with silicone, 100% waterproof and are easy to use with no mess.
As a plug for myself, I will not ship any kit without waterproof connectors; I use connectors from both Snaplok and 3M. It may cost me a few dollars more to give the connectors away for free but in the long term I know that you will be more satisfied with the results and that is what counts.
In summary, waterproof connectors are an essential part of the Underground
Fence system and should be treated as a necessity rather than an option. In the
long term they will save you time and money and a good connector will also speed
up your installation time.
