Why You Will Putt Better With a Heavy or Heavier Putter

When the first putter was made, several hundred years ago, the greens were very different from those of today. Oldtimers, like me, will even tell you how much they have changed in just the last 50 years. The original putters were similar in weight to the ones of today, about 1 pound. That weight was fine for the rough, slow rolling greens of the past but NOT for today's smooth, fast rolling modern greens. To understand this you may have to change a misconception that many folks have. When the greens are fast you need a HEAVIER putter, NOT a lighter one. The same length stroke with a lighter putter will putt the ball much farther than that same stroke with a heavier one. It's true, believe me. The PGA tour pros know this and went to heavier putters a number of years ago. "Tour Weight" and "Tour Issue" putters are heavier than standard. You can take a nice smooth stroke, even on shorter putts, and eliminate that short, jerky, out of control stroke that never works.

As the pros discovered though, just having a heavy putter head is not the answer. To get a well balanced putter you must have counter balance weight in the shaft too. So regardless of the brand of putter the pro is using, many have added weight in the shaft. Several years ago the Heavy Putter company started selling putters that weigh twice the weight of a standard putter, or about TWO pounds, using a heavier putter head and counter balance weight in the shaft. They have been quite successful but thier putters are TOO HEAVY for many people. Another putter line, the SMOOTHIE Putters, are about half way between the two in weight, or about 1.5 pounds, and also use counter balance weighting in the shaft. The heavier weight will smooth out your stroke and keep the putter head going down the target line. This will prevent deceleration, the leading cause of missed short putts and help with the dreaded YIPS too. Both putter lines have different style heads and are available here on eBay.

On today's faster modern greens you WILL PUTT BETTER with a Shaft Weighted heavier putter.
