You see them all the time, but have you ever wondered if you could actually benefit from owning a GPS?

First, for any who may not know, just what is a GPS unit? It is an electronic, sattelite based Global Positioning System. And in Plain English that means it is a system that tracks your location and gives you directions to any other location.

Now, do you need one? I will go over some pros and cons and let you be the judge of that.

Reasons For Owning One:

  • Do you often drive alone and need a map. This device allows you to focus on the road, not a map. Much safer!
  • Are you a salesman who travels? Never be late for an appointment because you got lost!
  • Do you travel a long distance to work? These GPS systems can calculate the shortest route, a route avoiding highways, etc.
  • An Ebay Seller who buys items at Yard Sales, Estate Sales, etc? Just plug in the addresses and go! This is so much better that following signs that lead to nowhere!
  • A portable unit is perfect for the traveler! When you rent your car in a foreign location, you will always know how to get where you want to be.

Some Things to Consider Before Purchasing one:

  • Price - Although they are getting more inexpensive, they are still a big investment. Make sure you are not paying for more than you need.
  • Reliability - Many units are reviewed on their performance. Check out these reviews. All you have to do is search for GPS reviews in your browser.

Now, I bought mine right here on Ebay. I did much research before doing so. I would suggest you do the same if purchasing one online.

I had considered:

  • First and foremost the seller's feedback!
  • The model's reliability (through research on the web)
  • The cost - this included calling around to find out what installation would cost.
  • The features included - color screen, size of screen, etc
  • Did I need a monthly subscription service? With some models you do. Ours runs on disks so we didn't need a subscription.
  • Does it come with a Factory Warrenty?

If you are interested in these units, here's a link for the Ebay Search: GPS Units .

I hope I have given you a starting point in your research. Do plenty of it, because a GPS unit is a wonderful thing to have IF you have purchased the right one for your needs!
