Please, do not be decieved into believing that Mutton is a "cruelty-free" alternative
to other furs. These wooly farm animals are not being raised in any environment
that remotely resembles humanness.
The horrible truth is that like all factory farmed animals, these sheep are kept in concentrated volumes -
fed antibiotics to counter the effects of overcrowding and hormones to promote growth. Bigger sheep = more wool/pelt$.
Their tails are cut off without anesthetics. And because of the processing speeds required in large agricultural business,
their teats are often cut off during shearing. No one who cares for animals could possibly think these practices merciful or kind.....
I won't elaborate any further about the sheep's lot but would encourage those curious to investigate the practice of "mulesing" on
the sheep ranch. hardly cruelty free......
Each year, approximately 4,000,000 baby Karakul lambs are killed within a day or two of their birth to make Persian lamb fur coats and trim.
The reason that the baby Karakul lambs are killed so soon after birth is because their tight little curls of wool begin to unwind after three days. To the best of my knowledge, these lambs are killed by having their throats cut while they are fully conscious..
So I would discourage anyone who seeks to exercise compassion to avoid lamb & mutton skin coats.
What's a consumer to do? Perhaps the safest bet for health and heart is to purchase cottons or any of the many other fashionable and warm man made textiles whose contents are indeed cruelty free.
