Why A Crochet Pattern Kit?

by crochetbylorileigh

So you have conquered the beginning skills of crochet.  Or you are a veteran crafter.  Either way a crochet pattern kit may be right for you.  This option is wonderful for anyone who does not want to, or does not have the time to, collect all of the necessary supplies for that perfect project.  I have had it happen before - you see a picture on the outside of a crochet pattern book, and you just have to make it!  However, it turns out that the yarn has been discontinued, or those buttons are nowhere to be found.  A crochet kit may be the answer.

Of course not all crochet pattern kits are created equal, so my first reccomendation is:

Know What Is Included: Some pattern kits may only supply the crochet pattern instructions and the yarn.  Others may supply everything - the yarn, the pattern instructions, any necessary accessories (i.e. buttons, trims, adornments), even including the necessary crochet hooks.  Personally, I find it most convenient to have everything included except the hooks.  If you are an experienced crocheter you probably already have them, and they are very easy to obtain if you do not.  Leaving these out can also reduce the cost by a few dollars, so you aren't forced to pay for something you may already have.

Know the Skill Level of the Project:  It can be very frustrating to find a pattern you adore only to discover that the project is too complicated and so never gets finished.  Many a new crocheter has had this happen.  If the skill level is not explicitly stated, ask.  Better to know that a project is beyond your level of skill than to spend the money, and often of more frustration, the time, to find out after the fact.  If the pattern is being offered by the Designer they should be able to give you a great deal of information, such as types of stitches used and the approximate length of time a project will take to complete.  Even if the kit is offered by an intermediary some skill level is usually indicated on the packaging, such as Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.

Price:  The price of your crochet pattern kit is going to depend on a number of different factors, including cost and avaliability of yarn.  This is probably the single largest contributing factor.  In addition, any other materials that are included, such as lace or ribbon, will add to the price.  Finally, the pattern instructions, which may of course be used over and over, were created by someone who took the time to figure out how to explain the design to others. This will also contribute to the overall price of any crochet pattern kit.

Happy Crocheting!
