Who has the best $1 Double Cheeseburger? Deals versus Taste
I’ve been eating them because they really are a good deal. 2 double cheeseburgers for lunch is enough food, so lunch for $2 is a deal these days.
So who has the better Value menu Double Cheeseburger out of the big 3 McDonald's, Burger King or Wendy’s. I spent a total of $6 to find out at 3 local Southern California restaurants.
1) Burger King - Double Cheeseburger - I went there are 11:30 right before the big lunch rush. The burger was a good size and based on the BK website each sandwich is about 500 calories.
Overall I left full but the taste and flavor were not there for me. The burgers were bland, and did not taste freshly grilled. Also the cheese was melted but was a little waxy and looked a bit too processed. The bun did not have any toasted flavor.
Overall I give Burger King Double Cheeseburger a 7 out of 10, not going to crave it, but a good deal and value if you are real hungry and broke. 5 out 5 for value, but only 2 out of 5 for taste.
2) McDonalds $1 McDouble (1 slice of cheese was removed to keep the sandwich on the dollar menu)
Mcdonalds $1 McDouble (recently McDonalds cut back to 1 slice of cheese to keep the sandwich at $1, double cheeseburger is available but not for $1)
Although the McDouble is smaller than the BK sandwich, the flavour was good. 2 seared patties kept warm but did not need reheating. I went after the lunch rush around 2pm, and was not overly hungry and the the 2 sandwiches were a perfect snack. The Mcds website has each burger at 390 calories, and the meat was hot, the cheese nicely melted by the meat, and the bun had a nice fresh taste. The burger was not too greasy either.
My only compliant was that I could have eaten a third McDouble with no problem. So either the burger is really tasty and I wanted more, or else the sandwich is a little on the small size for me.
I give this a 9 out of 10, 5 out of 5 for taste (keep in mind this is a $1 sandwich) and a 4 out of 5 for value, given I think I would have needed a 3 burger to be full.
3) Wendy’s - Double Stack 360 calories per. I went here around 5:00 and really hungry. Fresh never frozen meat right off the grill. I was hungry and looking forward to my burgers. Here was the problem, I guess because the meat is cooked fresh sometimes a beef patty can sit on a oily grill longer than optimal. My burgers were overcooked and greasy, so bad that the oil soaked through the bottom of my bun. I could not eat the bottom part of the bun on one of my sandwiches.
I think Wendy’s has the best potential to be a great tasting sandwich, but go when the resturant is busy so your meat is not over cooked. (FYI - Wendy’s uses over cooked burger meat as the beef in their chili, great way to offer good tasting meat in the chili)
I wanted to give Wendy’s a better score for their $1 double but overall 2 for taste and 2 for value (as I threw out half a sandwich, and then ordered another meal) So a disappointing 4 out of 10. But maybe I’ll go again and let you know if anything is better.
So as we all try and save a few bucks by eating off the value menus of the nations fast food restaurants, the battle of taste and value of the $1 double cheeseburgers goes to McDonalds McDouble, now as you enjoy the sandwich just do not try and figure out how they can produce a $1 100% beef burger for you and still make money.
