Advantages

- A scooter usually comes with a basket and has more places to storeor carry items.

- Scooters are available either with three or four wheel configurations.
- Medicare approves both scooters and power wheelchairs for qualified reimbursement.
- Some scooters can be taken apart for easier transport.
- Elevating seats (power seats) are an option on some scooters. This makes it easier to reach higher while seated on your scooter.
Disadvantages
- Scooters are not as maneuverable as a power wheelchair and therefore you need more room to make turns.
- A scooter is not as easy to use indoors because they are less maneuverable.
- You need two hands to steer and control a scooter and only one for a power wheelchair.
- Some three wheel scooters, under certain conditions, may have a tendency to tip over.
Power Wheelchairs
Advantages
- Power Wheelchairs are able to make turns in a smaller area; therefore, they have greater maneuverability.
- Power Wheelchairs have more seating options such as low pressure position pads, etc.
- Power Wheelchairs have greater legrest options. In other words, elevating legrests are available on Power Wheelchairs but not on Scooters.
- Since a Power Wheelchair is controlled with a joystick mounted on the armrest, only one hand is needed to control. a motorized wheelchair.
- Some Power Wheelchairs can be disassembled for easier transport.
- Elevating seats are a option on some Power Wheelchairs.
- Folding Power Wheelchairs are more easily transported.
- Medicare approves Power Wheelchairs for qualified reimbursement.
Disadvantages
- Baskets, rearview mirrors and light options are not available.
- Power Wheelchairs cost much more.
- Power Wheelchairs are available with four wheel configurations, only.
