So many threads! What do I need???
There are so many threads available out there for the great art of quilting that it can get confusing deciding which thread to buy for a particular project. For each thread there is a purpose but there often many choices that can be made according to your needs and preferences. Here is info that I have found that may be of help:
Piecing or Patchwork by hand or machine
- All-Purpose Thread
- mercerized cotton thread
Applique by Hand
- Silk Thread
- Cotton Thread
- All-Purpose Thread
- When in a bind-a single strand of embroidery floss
Applique by Machine
- All-Purpose for satin stitch
- Metallic Threads for special effects
- Buttonhole twist for blanket/buttonhole stitch
- Nylon monofilament for invisible stitching
Quilting by Hand
- Hand Quilting Thread. This thread is very specifically marked for its purpose.
Extra tip: I am a die-hard hand quilter. I coat all my thread in beeswax. It not only add strength to the thread it save a lot of tangled thread heartaches
Quilting By Machine
- All-Purpose for general quilting
- Buttonhole twist for prominence in stitching
- Metallic Thread for decorative effects
- Nylon monofilament for invisible stitches
