What To Bring
No matter if you decide to travel light or bring everything including the kitchen sink, you will
need several items of warm clothing. Many people make the mistake of assuming Cuzco is
tropical because it is below the equator. However, as we described earlier, like all higher altitude
locations, Cuzco and Machu Picchu tend to be cool and breezy, especially at night. Those who
walk the Inca Trail often wear wool shirts or parkas.
You will also need a pair of sturdy hiking shoes or boots. The Inca Trail is rocky and steep and
even exploring the ruins around Machu Picchu requires climbing. Sandals are NOT a good idea
as your feet and ankles need more support and protection. Because new shoes tend to need
breaking in before they become comfortable, it is best to go with a pair that have been worn for
some time. Blisters and chafing may still occur, but it is less likely with a worn pair of boots that
fit properly.
Some people like to bring trinkets to share with the locals. Items such as pens and pencils, key
rings, T-shirts, headbands, and other inexpensive goods make nice gifts and can be given in place
of tips in certain situations.
What To Leave At Home
Obviously items such as weapons, drugs, and other illegal goods or those that will not pass
through airport security should be left at home. A pocketknife or Swiss knife set may come in
handy on the trail, but may not make it through metal detectors or security checks. Other very
expensive items such as flashy jewelry, high-end camping equipment, and designer clothing will
draw unnecessary attention to you and your group. If you can do without it, leave it at home.
